Modular Data Centers on a Budget
HP has one. Oracle (Sun) has one. IBM has one and so does EMS. Of course, I’m referring to Elliptical Mobile Solutions and their modular data center solutions.
While the big guys are known for their semi-trailer-like models, EMS provides a 42U, self-contained, micro-data center, the R.A.S.E.R. which stands for Relocatable Adaptive Suspension Equipment Rack. They also sell ½ rack mobile versions, but we’ll just focus on the R.A.S.E.R.
What is it? The R.A.S.E.R. is a completely self-contained 42U, vendor neutral enclosure with 42,000 BTU of closed loop cooling and dual power outlets that provides the equivalent of 130 ft2 of fireproof floor space. It contains all of the facilities found in a traditional data center (cooling, fire suppression, security) in a single rack that is re-locatable while fully populated.
Why should you care? You should care because you want to save $ on power, space or cooling. If you want to save in those areas consider that the R.A.S.E.R. saves 75-90% in CapEx & 50-75% in OpEx expenses compared to a traditional Tier II or Tier IV facility respectively (according to a joint EMS, Uptime Institute white paper). You also pay as you grow with the R.A.S.E.R. and it’s not hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars, like the big guys. Want another independent source?
