Is A CFD Study For Your Data Center Worth It?

Computation Fluid Dynamics… conjures up images of a sleek aircraft in a huge wind tunnel with smoke streams flowing smoothly over the wings – at least for me it does. The cool thing about CFD though (pun intended) is that it can be used to model & predict environmental conditions in your data center.

If you’re unfamiliar with CFD, it’s a set of algorithms and numerical methods that predict fluid flow and all the characteristics that go with it, like temperatures and pressures. So what does this mean for your data center?

With a CFD analysis you can:

  • Find hot spots or potential hot spots
  • Find areas of cooling inefficiencies – bypass air and so on, and
  • Run “what-if” scenarios to model potential solutions to your heating/cooling problems.

Implementing the solution derived from the what-if scenario will very likely save big bucks on your cooling (and thus power bill) and extend the life of your equipment.  A Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis should be part of any good data center cooling audit. At CSC, we partner with world-class technology companies to provide customized cooling audits to help you define and customize the right cooling solution for you.
